Adderbury Lakes
Adderbury Lakes are owned by Adderbury Parish Council and managed by them as a designated Local Nature Reserve and on behalf of the inhabitants of Adderbury. They are seen as a very valuable village resource.
They consist of two interconnected lakes fed by local streams and springs that step gently down a clay-lined valley and eventually lead to the Sor Brook. In the nineteenth century the Lakes were a part of the ornamental garden of Adderbury House and after a long period of neglect were restored in the 1980s.
There are pleasant walks at the Lakes, and most of the site is wheelchair accessible. There is a range of wild plants, trees, animals and birds to be seen, some of which are identified on notice boards at the site. Dogs are allowed on this Nature Reserve, but must be kept on a short lead. There are seats at intervals. Since this is a local reserve, there is very little parking, with just three spaces available at the Lake Walk entrance.
Visitors to the Lakes are asked to take note of warning signs at the site, since there is deep water and treacherous mud to be met with, and to take notice of any guidance that may be offered by Wardens at the site. Particular care should be taken to look after children and the elderly and infirm. The Lakes are closed during the hours of darkness and may be closed altogether at short notice in high winds or to allow maintenance involving machinery on site.
The Lakes are maintained by volunteer working parties of Adderbury inhabitants. Residents of the village are encouraged to join these volunteers, and details can be obtained from the Parish Council.
